Roads have always been a source of
fascination for me, so when I visited Colorado in August of 1990, I found that
Colorado/s Roadways were not only scenic, but they were a challenge to drive as
well.
But it wasn’t until I began to study
& explore Colorado’s Historic Mountain Railroads that I learn not only the
history of the railroads, but the roadways that grew out of the roadbed after
the railroads were abandoned & dismantled.
My studies into the roadways & their
histories truly began in September of 2009 when I decided to compile a complete
listing of them like I had done earlier with the Mountain Passes.
I found Matt Selak’s Website “The
Highways of Colorado” @ mesalek.com, and I not only found a listing & the
histories of all of Colorado’s Current Highways, but also a listing &
Histories of all of Colorado’s Highways going back to the Auto Motor Trails of
the early 1900’s, and through my own separate research, I found Colorado’s
State Primary Roads.
This caused me to not only drive &
explore them for myself, but to learn everything that could about them,
By using Matt Selak’s information and
format, but tweaking it to suit my needs, I am writing reports on all of the
roads.
I have gone one step further in that I
have included detailed instructions on how to drive & explore them.
My reports begin with the Toll Roads
& end with the Auto Motor Trails as I slowly peel back the hands of time.
I have put 5 years so far into this
project, and I will be working in it for years to come.
Notes:
1. All
of the information that are contained in these reports are as current & as
accurate as I can make then with the information that I was able to obtain.
2. The
reports are written from the 1st alignment to the last known or
current alignment.
3. I
have used the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer as my main map source
4. Some
of the routing has been my best guess using the information that I have.
